E3 – the Electronic Entertainment Expo is on! What’s E3?
Every year, the ESA presents the highly acclaimed Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the world’s most important show dedicated exclusively to the interactive entertainment industry. Wholly owned by the ESA, E3 attracts tens of thousands of industry professionals from around the world to see the latest in interactive entertainment software and related products, and to participate in three days of thought-provoking workshops and seminars.
The bit that interests gamers though are the press conferences where we can find out what stuff we have in store for the not too distant future. Gamespy has a good report card roundup of the Big Three’s conferences and presentations. Five editors grade each company (Sony, MS, Nintendo) on the hardware and games showing at E3. The one that interests me the most as I am buying might buy a PS3 when they come out, is the Sony conference where they dropped a few bombshells that haven’t gone down too well with others either.
The key points are:
- The PS3 will be released in Japan on November 11th – followed by US and Europe on November 17th.
- The PS3 will have a built in hard disc
- The PS3 will be released in two versions.
- A fully featured one ($599 - 60 gig hd)
- Less expensive one ($499 – 20 gig hd, no WiFi, no HDMI, no card reader)
- The boomerange controller has been ditched in favor of the hugely innovative PS2 controller, with brand new gyroscopic capabilities (
stolen from inspired by the Nintendo Wii no doubt). Controller rumble was removed too.
I can buy an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii for the price of the good PS3. Hmm..
