On May 1, it was announced that Blizzard has obtained the domain name Diablo3.com.  Previously, it was dedicated to those who were huge fans of the Diablo series (myself included, but didn’t even realize the fan site til I went to Diablo3.com).  So, are we going to see an announcement soon of the continuation of the Diablo series?  Me, personally, I hope so.  I loved the game, and there were still some questions to be answered at the end of the game.  Now, my opinion might change should it go MMPORG though.  I don’t care for those types of games, nor do I have the time to play those type of games (I don’t have the time right now to even play Oblivion, The Game of the Year Edition).  I thought that Blizzard went the wrong way using Warcraft as the basis for their MMPORG instead of Diablo, but that’s a different rant.

So, what do you folks think?  Has Blizzard set up a major announcement coming soon…or are they just continuing to tease those of is who thought that Diablo is one of the best (PC) video game franchises of all time.  After all, it was Diablo that put Blizzard on the map.

I for one am glad that Blizz went with Warcraft for their *first* MMORPG.. it’s turned out to be a fantastic experience. There’s just not enough lore and backstory to flesh out with Diablo to start such a huge world I thought. The lore that was there was good, but it’s scope was much more limited to me.. but that could just be because I only played the original Diablo and never got Diablo2. There could be more to it than the limited area of the first. There certainly wasn’t enough space and lands fleshed out in the original to make a huge MMO game without having to invent 90% of the game with new lore from what I remember.. it has been a looong time since I played it though. I could be forgetting a lot.

It will be interesting to see if the next one they move to MMORPG is the Starcraft franchise or the Diablo. They sure aren’t even hinting at either.

I don’t understand the idea that you won’t have time to play D3 if it’s more MMO oriented. You would play the game a lot to finish it and possibly a couple other times through? So if you just did it with other people that you could possibly build a more involved gaming experience/relationship with.. why wouldn’t you? There’s nothing about being MMO that flat out makes you a slave to the game if you have any resolve to resist the Skinner box principle of it. Ok.. ok.. easier said than done.

On another note.. will you be playing SC2?

I played D2 and the expansion pack through a few times…first time as a barbarian, second as an assassin. There were quite a few new places to explore in both versions of the game…granted the first game left you in Tristram, it was the second game that you went all over hell and back (pardon the pun), so you got to see more of the Diablo realm. A lot of places I’ve heard mentioned in WOW didn’t exist in the original Warcraft series, so I’m sure they were invented as well. Warcraft started out as a strategy game, but, you could also play as orcs or humans, and with 3, you played as all races at some point during the game.

I haven’t even played SC1 yet. Granted, it set up Warcraft. Perhaps if they have a set with SC1, the expansion packs and SC2, perhaps I’ll play. But until then, back to Oblivion.

Diablo was good, Starcraft still is one of my favorite games. Looking forward to SC2. Will check out Diablo3 whenever.

I disagree that Diablo “put Blizzard on the map”, even though Starcraft was released a little more than a year after Diablo was, it is the game that really put Blizzard in motion. WoW just passed Starcraft for 3rd on the most sold PC games of all-time. Combine Diablo, Diablo II and the expansion Lord of Destruction, and Starcraft still has outsold the entire Diablo library. I played D2 as well as the expansion, and I played Starcraft. These are two entirely different genres, and both kick ass, but I would have to say that Starcraft was the crown jewel of the Blizzard name until WoW came out.

As far as SC2, it is scheduled for release whenever Blizzard gets around to it. It will not be an MMORPG and you can read more about it at http://www.starcraft2.com. Diablo 3 might be taken in the direction of WoW in terms of MMORPG, and logically it would make sense, but I hope it does not. I hate the “pay to play” BS, but it appears here to stay. I’ve spent hundreds of hours playing both SC and D2, and I will probably play hundreds more when D3 and SC2 are released. I thoroughly enjoyed their previous versions and am anxious to own them.

The only game I ever geeked out on was the original Diablo. Had a clan and everything. Yeah, I would definitely have to get back into it. Keep us updated, eh?
