The fan on it stopped working a few months ago so I am fairly confident that is the source of her crashing. I don’t have another pci express to test it for sure. I bought it 4-5-07 and it came with a 1 year warranty. I bought it from Newegg.com I don’t have the box it came in or anything so I don’t think I can get any warranty coverage. After I type this up I’ll go check the manufacturer’s website to see if I can have any relief. If not I am asking for the power of you smart people to find a reasonable replacement for Chandra’s computer. Don’t wanna spend much more then 80 dollars but if there is a really good one for a few bucks more then that is fine. Any help is welcome.

Well, I looked on newegg.com again and found several pci express x16 for less then 50 dollars. I just need to know what I need to look for to get the most bang for my buck. Pipelines and stuff I don’t even know about. Thanks in advance.

This XFX 8600GT is $86 at newegg.com and while it’s not the powerhouse of today’s topend cards.. it’s the best of all the under $90 cards.. there are a quite a few other 8600gts for 80 bucks.. but this one has free shipping so it evens out there and this one’s memory is overclocked to 1180MHz were a normal GT is 800. 512 megs of memory (GDDR2 but you wanted cheap.. similar card with GDDR3 would be about 20 more.. there’s a couple)

It’s got a “double lifetime warranty” whatever that is.. might be of interest to you at this juncture ;-)

If I wasn’t gonna be able to step up to $130 range.. and an 8800gt (way more powerful) then this 8600gt is the one I would choose. It will run WoW and Starcraft 2 with ease and most FPS’s out today with acceptable speed on a halfway decent computer. Unless money is an issue, I wouldn’t recommend any of the sub $50 cards if you might wanna play some good game that comes out in 6-12 months. Well and have it look good. There’s not gonna be a lot of difference in that 50 buck range really. They will all choke on anything greater than WoW that you throw at em.

For ATI, you are on your own.. I’m not a fan. I know the HD 3850 is a very capable card though.. but it’s around $100 for a 256 megger? *shrug* I didn’t look too hard. I’ve just had bad luck with both ATI’s I’ve ever had. Really bad luck. They can’t all be bad though or they wouldn’t be in business LOL.

Couldn’t you just buy a $2 fan and potentially solve your problem and play WoW for now maybe?

The fan stopped working months ago I believe. I failed to do anything about it. Am I wrong in thinking the card got fucked up going that long without a fan? Also, I looked at the fan and I wouldn’t know how to get the thing off without breaking something. I couldn’t even get the power unplugged let alone how to get the pegs out of the holes. Here is a picture of the card:

Click this pretty link Scott made.

I guess I really need to learn how to make that a pretty link…. if I was less lazy.

To make that pretty link you would just put

    <a href="http://www.urlgoeshere.com">Pretty text you want as link</a>

Now the link shows as the words Pretty text you want as link instead of the big nasty, ugly url defined by the <a href= tag.

NOW.. as for your fan.. I would wager that you would remove those white pins holding the fan shrouding on by squeezing their little prongs on the backside together with needle nose pliers so you can push them back through the PCB (Printed Circuit Board)

Don't you find it stupid that people bother to type the anacronym if they are just going to spell out what the hell it means anway? Why bother even typing PCB? That's the kind of thing that annoying, self-righteous people like me do though.

I got a RMA#. Hopefully they will replace it or fix it. Prolly is going to take a long time. Cantra maybe sidelined for a couple weeks. Not a bad thing really, she has a final coming up then training for her part time job. Guess I’ll put healbot on my puter so I can play her if need be.

So were the onboard video issues driver related, Kevin?

Yeah so, I am only buying EVGA from now on. The replacement they sent me was the 8600gt. I am sure it because they didn’t have any of the 7600 laying around but they could have easily tried to charge me the diffrence or something. So I am very happy. Looks like I sent it out on the 15th and got it back the 28th. Two weeks is pretty good going and coming from CA with a Holiday thrown in there.

verra nice..verra nice. They did you right in the first place by honoring the already expired 1 year warranty!
    Is it running pretty smooth?

As smooth as can be expected running vista with 1gig of memory. Chandra’s Birthday is June 24 if anyone wants to get her 2 gig of memory haha.
